When Morien took Ludovica as his apprentice, I made a belt to mark the occasion.

When a master of the Laural takes an apprentice in the SCA, the apprentice usually receives a green belt to signify the beginning of the master and the apprentice’s bond as teacher and student. Master Morien asked if I would make a green belt for his apprentice Ludovica, and I agreed. Ludovica provided the fabric and Morien provided the buckle (made by Raymond’s Quiet Press). Ludovica wanted a recreation of a late 14th through early 15th century belt, and provided references. I attempted to recreate this particular kind of belt as best as I could.

The core of the belt is vegtan leather. I punched hundreds of holes in the leather to facilitate the stitching. The leather was then sealed. I sewed the green fabric onto the belt using gold embroidery floss. I then used the same embroidery floss to create the diamond and notch effect along the length of the belt. The belt holes were reinforced with stronger gold embroider thread. The excess fabric was glued down along the back. Finally, the buckle was polished before it was attached.
